OBDURATE

obdurate - adjective| AHB-duh-rut

Obdurate is a formal word meaning ‘resistant to persuasion’. Typically used to describe someone stubborn, opposed to change or stuck in their ways.

The obdurate teacher refused the student’s pleas to reschedule the test after the school was closed for asbestos.

So here’s my second entry, a word and a piece that I feel represents my inner world. There are multiple personalities swimming around and they’re all very obdurate and passionate about what they want and what they believe.

The other day, I was speaking to my cousin about how she operates sets as a director and saying that she has no friends on the set, and knows exactly what she wants before she begins to shoot. And while at least one of my personalities relates to this, I find myself erring on the side of collaboration and flexibility more often than not in order to achieve the best results. That being said, there are moments in which I know what I want and won’t budge on that note but the older I get the more rare I find these occurrences. You know, the old adage ‘don’t block your own blessings’.

Sometimes we can get so caught up and consumed by what we think we want or what’s in the ethos of the future that we miss what’s right in front of us. Or for the spiritual among us, following whatever God’s divine plan is for us as opposed to our own human machinations. So don’t be obdurate. But sometimes definitely do.
