wayvy weekly //// [why is art important?]

Paul Robeson once said “The artist must elect to fight for freedom or slavery.” And wayvydon fights for the former. We all believe in the future and the potential of the kids, man. Without art, this is impossible. If you think about it, a lot of the aesthetics we see in real life today were birthed in technocratic science fiction novels and movies. Stark white rooms, bleaching over exposed lights and machine like efficiency from everyone except the few powerful aristocrats and leaders that control the entire world. The first subjects to be removed from curricula is usually art, or music. Not because they aren’t crucial to learning but quite the opposite. It’s really quite difficult to imagine a brighter future for oneself if you are not taught the power of imagination, and also how to harness it. It is for this reason, fundamentally, that I believe is among the, if not the most important thing that has emerged from the advent of civilization. It has morality baked into its very fabric as the means are just as important as the ends to the artist. The artist understands, just as the mathematician does, that the solution is statistically the least significant part of the journey. You will only stand on the stage but for a fleeting moment as you accept your awards for your contributions to society. There will be infinitely more moments where you will find yourself among the gritty, unglamorous elements of society and you will need to derive great pleasure from it. If you don’t, the award will ring empty. For any One Piece fans out there, I suspect that that is what the One Piece will be. (Whenever Oda decides to end this long winded tale) The old adage, “It’s not the destination or even the journey. But the friends we made along the way.” So let's be friends. Please?

So here for the wayvywork of the week we have THE PROTECTORS, which for me, honestly, is one of my personal faves. One of my earlier works, I really like the combination of childish scribbles and a more mature measured illustration. Like the angel’s face, with the sharp black ink in stark contrast to the softer pastel and paint. I also really love the vibrancy of the colours and how they kinda pop off the page. My favourite part it definitely the shadows cast by “the artists” in the corner. It reminds me that we are not only living for ourselves and each other, but what we’re gonna leave behind once we’re gone. Furthermore, once you are aligned and listening to your guides, everything will unfold precisely as it is meant to.
